St. James - Assiniboia

If you are to travel west along Portage Avenue from downtown, you’ll run into St. James/Assiniboia, a place that has no shortage of shops, restaurants, and a mix of rather quaint neighbourhoods that run either toward the Assiniboine River (and are thereby more pricey) or further north into nice quiet streets that are studded with parks. The area encompasses a diversity of socio-economic backgrounds, from prosperous communities like the St. Charles Country Club area near the river (recognized for its excellent golf course) to middle-class areas in most parts of St. James and to more working-class neighbourhoods around the Richardson International Airport.

There are plenty of things to do in the area, including countless family activities in the businesses located throughout its strip malls. History buffs will get a kick out of locations like Grant’s Old Mill—an 1800s flour mill on Sturgeon Creek—or The Living Prairie Museum—a huge area that preserves the region’s original flora, complete with walking trails and all kinds of wildlife, particularly bird species like small raptors. The neighbourhood is also home to the Assiniboia Downs horse racing track and the Red River Ex in summer.

Sub neighbourhoods include:  Assiniboia Downs, Buchanan, Crestview, Glendale, Heritage park, Kirkfield, Sturgeon Creek, Westwood, Airport, Birchwood, Booth, Bruce Park, Deer Lodge, Jameswood, Kensington, King Edward, Silver Heights, Woodhaven.
